Punjab cadre IAS officer attempts to commit suicide

Chandigarh, Oct 20 (UNI) A senior IAS officer of the Punjab cadre attempted to commit suicide at his sector 39 residence here this evening Mr A S Chhatwal hung himself from a celing fan inside his residence. However, a gunman of the Punjab Police posted at his residence, saw him hanging through a window and immediately rushed inside.

He pulled down mr Chhatwal and rushed him to the PGI Mr Chhatwal's condition was stated to be serious.

According to police sources,the reason for the suicide was still not known. Mr Chhatwal is secretary, science and technology and non-conventional energy.

His wife was away to Ludhiana at the time of the incident and she reached here after being informed. Senior IAS officers rushed to the PGI on hearing of the incident.

Police sources while confirming the attempted suicide refused to divulge any further details.
