Is narcissism behind Madge's failed relationship and the credit crunch?

London, Oct 20 : Madonna's divorce and the credit crisis may have been caused by narcissism, according to a leading expert.

The term narcissism means love of oneself, and refers to the set of character traits concerned with self-admiration, self-centeredness and self-regard.

According to Simon Crompton, everyone have narcissistic traits, but they're so strong in some people that it can cause problems in relationships, reports TimesOnline.

Crompton is the author of 'All About Me: Loving a Narcissist'.

Previous studies have also shown that narcissism seems to be responsible for many people's success in business, celebrity and the performing arts.

A separate study from the University of Surrey found that narcissistic traits were stronger in high- level business executives than in criminals.

According to Crompton, Madonna got where she is because she is driven to hog the limelight. It's down to her narcisstic ability to impose her vision of herself on the world, and those who surround her.

Besides that, she and Ritchie have been cocooned in a celebrity bubble, surrounded by people who never challenge what they say or do.

Crompton says that seeing each other's point of view, saying sorry, backing down, isn't in their nature.

He said that the case is similar with all those narcissistic high achievers in the City and markets who are being blamed for the financial panic, as even they can't say sorry.

It's a classic narcissistic trait to have a bulletproof belief in your own abilities, and to react horribly at the faintest hint of criticism, says Crompton.
