Bill to curb anti-social activities introduced

Puducherry, Oct 20 (UNI) Puducherry Home Minister E Valsaraj introduced the Puducherry Prevention of Anti-social Activities Bill, 2008 in the territorial assembly today.

The Bill is expected to be debated and passed in the budget session of the House in March next year.

Presently, the preventive detention laws enforced in the UT are National Security Act 1980, Conservation of foreign exchange and prevention of smuggling activites Act 1974 and prevention of black marketing and maintanance of supply of essential commodities Act 1980.

Since these Acts are not sufficient and effective to control anti-social activities of bottlegers, those habitually committing or abetting offences, criminal intimidation, drug and forest offenders, gamblers, goondas and immoral trafficking activites, it is proposed to bring in a local legislation for preventive detention of people indulging in these activites.
