TN CM resolves to stop genocide of Tamils in Lanka
Chennai, Oct 18 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today resolved to stop the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka at any cost.
In an epistle to partymen, the DMK leader said he was totally disturbed that the future of the Tamils in the island nation has become a question mark.
''I am terribly disturbed, depressed and spending sleepless nights as the Tamils in Lanka are suffering. Let us stop the genocide of Tamils at any cost'', he said.
Rejecting a suggestion that the DMK had done nothing for the Sri Lankan Tamils, Mr Karunanidhi said his party had twice lost the government in 1976 and 1991 for the sake of the Lankan Tamils.
After the DMK government was dismissed in 1976, the then Prime Miniser Indira Gandhi herself had said in a public meeting that the DMK government's act of supporting the Tamils in Sri Lanka against the interest of the Lankan government was one of the resons for the sacking of the government, he recalled.
For the next 12 years, the DMK was not in power, but even while being an opposition party, it had done its best for the Lankan Tamils, he claimed.
When the AIADMK regime adopted a resolution in the state assembly in 1981, being the leader of the opposition party, he did not stage a walk out. On the other hand, he spoke in support of the resolution to protect the Tamils.
''When the DMK was in the opposition, it had acted in a magnanimous manner in respect of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. But now the people could make a comparison as how magnanimous Ms Jayalalithaa is'', he said.
Referring to the steps being taken by Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh, he said this gave him the hope that the Centre would come forward to protect the Tamils in Lanka.
Mr Karunanidhi also appealed to the people to take part in large numbers in the Human chain rally, to be organised here on October 21.
