Kohima, Oct 17 (UNI) Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for taking necessary actions to protect the lives and property of Christians and other religious minorities in India.

Official sources here today said Mr Rio, on a letter to Dr Singh yesterday, expressed deep concern and anguish over the various incidents of atrocities being perpetrated against Christian community , apart from the damages inflicted on Christian institutions in the states like Orissa and Karnataka.

'' It is imperative that quick and timely actions be taken against the religious fundamentalists, who are mindlessly targeting innocent people and their property'' the Chief Minister said.

He also mentioned in the letter that religious intolerance had no place in a secular country like India, adding religious fundamentalism and communalism would eat away vital fabrics of the nation, leading to disunity and disintegration of the country.
