HC favours ban on bus overtaking in city limits
Kochi, Oct 16 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today observed that overtaking of buses by should be prohibited at least in city limits.
A Division Bench of Justices C N Ramachandran Nair and Haroon Al-Rasheed stated that competition between buses was the main reason for accidents and once overtaking was prohibited the rate of accidents would come down.
The court also observed that there should be periodic checks to find out whether the buses were exceeding the speed limits.
Offenders' permits should be suspended and the permits of repeated offenders cancelled, the court said.
The Bench further observed that there should be doors at both entry and exit points and the government should consider reducing road taxes for additional expenses incurred for installing the doors.
The court directed the Chief Secretary to file a detailed statement on the matter within three weeks.
The Bench made the observations while considering two petitions seeking enhancement of compensation in motor accident cases.
