Bengaluru, Oct 16: A large number of people queued up at the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office, as the process of refunding Sakrama money began on Wednesday, Oct 15.
The government had implemented the Sakrama scheme last year, to regularise building violations up to a certain extent, as a one time measure. Nearly 2,000 people had applied for their building violations to be regularised. But there were objections from various quarters, that the government was trying to extract a heavy amount under the Sakrama scheme, and demands that a revised scheme (at a lower rate) be introduced.
Residents waited for the revised Sakrama scheme for almost a year. With no decision in sight, the demand for public money to be refunded gew. The refund process began on Wednesday. BBMP officials said as many as 1,800 people paid money under the scheme last year. On the first day of refunding, nearly 200 people received the cheques. Those who had applied for the scheme found themselves at the receiving end, as they lost interest on their money.
