SC upholds Thampu's appointment as Principal of St Stephen's
New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court today upheld the appointment of Mr Valson Thampu as Principal of St Stephen's College affiliated to University of Delhi.
A bench comprising Justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal upheld the Delhi High Court judgement of dismissing the petition filed by the university challenging Mr Thampu's appointment as the principal of the prestigious college by the college management without consulting the university.
The High Court had upheld the contention of the college management that since it was a minority institution, the management has the right to appoint a man of its choice as head of the college.
The apex court dismissed the appeal of the University and upheld the judgement of the High Court agreeing with the view that the minority institution need not take into confidence the University concerned while making appointment of a Principal because the minority institutions enjoy some privileges and the same cannot be encroached upon.
