Police releases Khaira and supporters

Kapurthala, Oct 13 (UNI) Bholath Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and his 70 supporters were released unconditionally by the police late last night.

Kapurthala police had arrested the legislator and his supporters on the charge of breach of peace under sections 107 and 151 CrPC.

Police had also registered a case against him and his 10 supporters for blocking the road, disobeying prohibitory orders and preventing the police officers from performing their duties under sections 283, 188 and 186 of the IPC.

SSP Rakesh Aggarwal said the SDM had discharged Mr Khaira and his supporters in the case under sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC but police would take decision in the other case registered against him and his ten supporters after completion of the investigations.

The MLA and his supporters were brought to local Sadar Police Station after their arrest from village Akbarpur in Bholath assembly constituency when they were trying to prevent the laying of foundation stone of a water supply scheme by former SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Congress workers today staged a protest dharna in front of the district court complex against the arrest of Khaira and Congress workers.
