3 militants killed in north Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 12 (UNI) Troops of Jammu and Kashmir police killed three militants in a night-long encounter in the frontier district of Kupwara, a defence ministry spokesman said today.

He said troops of 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 9 Para and police launched a joint operation in village at Kupwara last night following a tip-off about the presence of militants.

During the operation, militants attacked the search party at 0200 hrs, ensuing a fierce gunbattle, he said and added the firing continued throughout the night till first light this morning.

Three bodies of militants were recovered from the area, he said adding three ak rifles and other arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

He said the operation was still going on in the forest area when the reports last came in.
