Design is for common man, not for elite: NID Chief

Ahmedabad, Oct 11 (UNI) The Director of the National Institute of Design (NID) Dr Darlie O Koshy released his new book 'Indian Design Edge' yesterday.

Speaking at a book release function here, Dr Koshy said design and innovation are the new enabling forces that can unleash the power and potential of India, which has heritage of 5,000 years.

In the book, he said he has further developed his idea of design democracy. Today design is for common man and not for elite. This makes design more affordable and acceptable. Nano car is an example of the democracy of design.

Dr Koshy said that it is just not marrying technology and design or humanizing technology but also about ensuring that designs are in conformity with the inner core of the customer, which is very much linked with the cultural and emotional moorings of the customer.

He rued that at the individual level, Indians are very creative but society as such is not protecting Indian ideas and discoveries in the global arena. As a result, Indian Yoga and herbal medicines are being used by others to create wealth, while Indians are mute spectators.
