Four arrested in chromite smuggling case

Paradeep, Oct 10 (UNI) Altogether four people were arrested and sent to jail for transporting stolen chrome ore.

Acting on a tip-off, the police seized a truck carrying nearly 13 tonnes chromites and arrested four people near Laxminarayanpur chowk on the Paradeep-Daitary Expressway under Kendrapara police station.

Kendrapara police station Officer-in-charge Santanu Das said all the four were produced before the SDJM court in Kendrapara under Sections 379, 411 and 34 of Indian Penal Code besides the Mines Act yesterday.

They were remanded to jail custody on rejection of their bail petitions.

Earlier, the officials of Office of the Deputy Director of mines Jajpur Road had seized about 7 tons of chromite ores after conducting raids at several places in Balabhadrapur on the Paradeep-Daitary Express Way in July last.

During 2006 also the Kendrapara police had conducted raids at Alabanka, Laxminarayanpur and Balabhadrapur and managed to seize more than a truck load of chromites from these areas.

Police have in the past also seized a truck load of chromites from an abandoned house situated on the side of NH-5(A) at Laxminarayan pur, 2 tons of chromite dumped in a pond at Alabanka and 6 tons from a house behind the fishery office at Balabhadrapur.
