London, Oct 10 : A traditional butcher has been banned from chopping meat in the morning because tenants in flats above his shop find it disturbingly loud.
Brian Clapton stated that he has no option but to chop and prepare the meat in the morning itself in order to run his business.
"We start early because we are a traditional butcher's," The Telegraph quoted Clapton, as saying.
Clapton, who has been running his Brian's Meat Store business since 13 years was demanded in November 2007 to stop chopping the meat between 6am to 8am on the weekdays and till 9 am on the weekends or make the property sound proof.
Clapton has refused to soundproof the building, as he is a tenant and the freeholders should make the modifications.
"The council has ordered me to soundproof the building but this is their property and I am their tenant so as freeholders they are responsible for making these changes. I will not be doing anything but continuing to work hard, pay my taxes and rates and try to earn a honest living," he said.
Clapton has been taken to court for not obeying a Barking and Dagenham Council order.
The noise abatement notice was served after residents living above the shop complained and Landlady Sue Grimble claimed a number of tenants left due to the loud chopping sounds at unsociable hours.
However, Clapton pleaded not guilty to four counts of breaching a noise abatement order in August.
