Police step up security for Dussehra

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) Police have beefed up security in the metropolis and adjoining Thane district to ensure a peaceful celebration of Durga Puja and Dussehra festivities.

Police mounted an extra vigil following information from Intelligence agencies that terrorists could strike in the bustling city during the festive season, sources here said.

The nine-day Navratri festival has so far been peaceful in the city and suburbs and today being the last day, police are taking no chances and have deployed more personnel. In the morning, people flocked to temples to offer prayers.

For tomorrow's Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park, organised by Shiv Sena, police would be maintaining a strict vigil and have rounded up several anti-social elements as a precautionary measure.

Police personnel would be patrolling sensitive areas and keep a watch on crowded places like malls and main bazaars, the sources said.
