New varieties of onion, marigold developed
Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) Three new varieties of onion and marigold have been developed at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar.
The State Seed Sub Committee for Horticultural crops has given its approval for the release of three varieties for cultivation in the state, HAU Director of Research B S Chhillar said today.
He said the university scientists had developed three superior varieties which include Hisar Onion-3 of onion and Hisar Jafri-1 and Hisar Jafri-2 of marigold.
He said the state level seed sub committee for Horticultural crops which met at Panchkula last week had considered and approved the proposal for release of these new varieties.
According to Dr Chhillar, the onion variety Hisar Onion-3 was very high yielding with less bolting and very good keeping quality.
This varaiety, he said, was the outcome of the unstinted work of a team of scientists comprising Dr B S Dhankhar, Dr B S Dudi, Dr S K Dhankhar, Dr Avtar Singh and Dr S K Gandhi.
Underlining the characteristics of marigold varieties, he said that Hisar Jafri-1 (Hisar beauty) was a drarf variety suitable for exhibition, bedding and potting. ''Its flowers are dark red with petals yellow on the margins. It is an excellent variety for landscaping also.'' Likewise Hisar Jafri-2 was suitable for flower production besides landscaping, he added.
Both these varaieties had been developed by Ds B S Beniwal, Dr B S Dahiya, Dr D P Deswal and Dr M S Joon, he said.
