Tribal students demand more reservations in MU

Imphal, Oct 8: The Manipur University (MU), Imphal, was tense on Wednesday, Oct 8 owing to a stir launched by the tribal students demanding an increase of reserved seats for the Tribals. The All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) and Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU) had called a 36-hour bandh which concluded on Tuesday, Oct 7.

Over 100 students were detained during the stir. However, except some leaders, most of them were released, police said.

About 100 tribal students today left the hostel of the University complaining of insecurity there.

ATSUM spokesperson Joseph Hmar said the students would launch a stir if the leaders were not released.

The Manipur University Teacher's Association had urged all not to resort to violence during the strike. It appealed to all to take up the stir in a peaceful manner.
