Srinagar, Oct 8 (UNI) Alleging that the Central government had missed the opportunity for dialogue process when the Kashmir valley witnessed peaceful processions for the first time in two decades, the National Conference (NC) today said there could be no mass participation in the Assembly elections, if held, without addressing some basic issues.
However, the NC will participate in the poll process when held because it believes in democracy.
A three member-delegation of the NC, which met the three-member team of Election Commission of India (ECI), headed by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami here said there was no change in the stand of the party on holding of elections in the state.
During the meeting of our leaders with the centre in New Delhi, we had given in writing about the overall situation in the state and suggested measures to address the grievances of the people, a member of the NC delegation Dr Mehboob Baig told UNI.
We still insist that the measures suggested by the National Conference should be implemented for restoring full confidence of the people, he said.
He said the NC delegation informed the CEC team that the four-month turmoil in the state witnessed economic blockade and regional divide between Kashmir and Jammu.
Though the government made successful efforts to defuse the situation in Jammu, but no such efforts were made in Kashmir, they have told the CEC.
We have informed the team that there was a golden opportunity to the Centre to engage people in dialogue process when the valley witnessed peaceful demonstrations, Mr Baig said adding that but they have not made even an attempt to grab the opportunity.
He had question the intensions of the government and asked if talks were held, for which they were never against, in Jammu, why such a process was not initiated in Kashmir.
He said under the circumstances no credible elections were possible in the state, particularly in the Kashmir valley where people are alienated.
We have informed the CEC that some concrete measures had to be taken before going for polls for mass participation in the process.
However, the party being a firm believer in democratic process, will participate in polls when held, the NC delegation has informed the CEC.
