U'khand CM Khanduri seeks central status for Kumaon Univ

Dehra Dun, Oct 7 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting grant of Central University status to the Kumaon University after the HN Bahuguna University in Garhwal was recently accorded the status.

Expressing his gratitude to Dr Singh for granting central status to the HNB University, Maj. Gen (retd) Khanduri in his letter stated that giving a similar status to the Kumaon University was imperative due to its geographical location and regional aspirations of the people.

''The grant of central university status only to the Garhwal University would deprive the Kumaon region of the benefits that a Central University brings to higher education in general'', Maj. Gen Khanduri said.

He also emphasised that as Uttarakhand had two distinct geographical regions, the HNB Garhwal University was not easily accessible to students in Kumaon.
