Pondy: Police detain150 volunteers for picketing

Puducherry, Oct 6: Police arrested about 150 volunteers of different political parties and organisations when they attempted to picket the office of the District Collector here.

According to police, the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam(PDK) had sought permission for a demonstration near the Periyar statue to condemn the killing of the Tamils in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lankan military and pressurise the Centre to stop arms supply to the Lankan army.

But police denied permission for the stir, following which the PDK announced that it would picket the office of the district collector today in protest.

Accordingly,the PDK volunteers took out a procession, in which volunteers of the BSP, VCK, Viduthalai Vengaigal and Tamizhar Desiya Peravai joined expressing solidarity.

The police made the arrest after stopping the processionists near the Collectorate.
