Farmers protest as Sonia's rally

New Delhi, Oct 4 (UNI) In a major embarrassment to the Sheila Dikshit Government in Delhi, a group of agitating farmers today disrupted Congress president Sonia Gandhi's speech at a rally in the capital.

The rally was held to distribute provisional regularisation certificates to the representatives of over 1000 unauthorised colonies.

The farmers, who were demanding increased compensation for their land, shouted slogans against the Sheila Dikshit government and the Congress party, when Ms Gandhi rose to give her speech at the Chhatrasal stadium here.

Her speech was lost in the din, even as another group of Congress men shouted slogans to counter the farmers.

The main protestors were from Kanjawala village, who had been earlier lathicharged while agitating before the Delhi Assembly.

With assembly elections not too far away, the rally was being seen as the party's way to put up a pre-poll show of strength.
