Embankments alone cannot solve flood menace

Patna, Oct 4 (UNI) Embankments over rivers alone cannot prevent floods, but those constructed along with reservoir can be a permanent solution to the menace.

Sources at the Cenetral Water Commission (CWC) opined that embankments alone were not the solution, but those constructed with the reservoirs were everlasting solution to the problem.

They said the life of any embankment was about 30 to 40 years, whereas embankments supported by reservoir last for long.

The breach in Kushaha embankment over the river Kosi was in fact a natural calamity that took place due to the accumulation of several factors, including that of the heavy silt formed by the river, they added.

The sources admitted that construction of reservoir over the rivers passing through North Bihar depends on the consent of the neighbouring country Nepal, as a majority of the rivers flows to Bihar through the Himalayan country.

Once the reservoirs were constructed, it would not only solve the flood menace, but also help in irrigation and generating electricity.
