Railway denies increase in freight charges

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) The Railways today refuted reports in a section of the press that it had effected a five to seven per cent increase in freight charges from October 1.

''No freight rates whatsoever have been increase by the Railways,'' a railway spokesman said.

He clarified that as per the policy of the Railways, a maximum of 15 per cent discount is provided during the lean season between July 1 and September 30 for incremental loading. Similarly the Railways levy busy season surcharge at the rate of 5 to 7 per cent from October 1. It was being done for the past three years, he said.
