Governor leads Gandhi Jayanti celebration in Bengal
Kolkata, Oct 2 (UNI) Bengal today remembered the legacy of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on his 139th birth anniversary as his grandson Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi led the celebrations amid Ramdhun.
At the main official function at Gandhi Ghat in Barrackpore, the West Bengal Governor paid a floral tribute on the Martyr's Column amid chanting of mantras and Ramdhun by priests.
Earlier, students recited excerpts from the writings of Mahatma Gandhi while womenfolk participated in the Sutrayanja (spinning of yarn).
Floral triburtes were also placed by state PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami and Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb, among others. Floral wreaths were also placed on behalf of the Deputy High Commission Office of Bangladesh in Kolkata.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the people should strive to maintain peace and non-violence in all respects in life as the day was also being observed as International Non-violence Day.
Mr Gandhi also paid a floral tribute on a life-sized statue of the Father of the Nation near Maidan in the city.
Various programmes were, meanwhile, also held in government establishments, Congress offices and Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan in the city to mark the occasion.
