Gandhi Jayanti observed with fanfare
Barrackpore, Oct 02 (UNI) The 140th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was celebrated with great enthusiasm today as different programmes were organised to mark the occasion.
An official function was held at the Gandhi Ghat here this morning with West Bengal Governor and a grandson of the great freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gandhi placing floral tributes on the Martyr's Column amid Ramdhun.
Earlier, students recited excerpts from the writings of Mahatma Gandhi while womenfolk participated in the Sutrayanja (spinning of yarn).
Floral triburtes were also placed by state PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami and Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb, among others. Floral wreaths were also placed on behalf of the Deputy High Commission Office of Bangladesh in Kolkata.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the people should strive to maintain peace and non-violence in all respects in life as the day is also being observed as International Non-violence Day.
Meanwhile, various programmes were also held in government establishments, Congress offices and Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan in the state capital to mark the occasion.
