Meira Kumar flags off walkathon
New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) Social Justice Minister Meira Kumar today flagged off a walkathon on International Day of Older Persons to promote inter-generational bonding.
About 2,500 senior citizens and school children participated in the event. Girls from Agartala's Dr B R Ambedkar Hostel, who participated in the walkathon, later presented a dance performance on the occasion.
Emphasising for sensitising the society towards needs of older people, she sought cooperation of NGOs and public, especially the youth, in helping the governemnt in creating an environment of respect, care and affection for elderly people.
The day is observed to recognise services rendered by senior citizens and to reiterate government's commitment towards them.
