Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka, Sep 29 (UNI) The golden town of KGF which is touted as the first town that got electricity in Asia exactly 100 years ago, plunged in to darkness for over six hours on Monday.

The town which once known world over for its gold fields was first to get electricity after renowned engineer late Sir M Visveswaraya designed and oversaw the construction of Shivanasamudram hydel power plant across Cauvery. The project was completed in 1908.

The Britishers built the plant to supply power to the gold mines.

But now the story is different as the town gets power supply which is more often erratic and never dependable.

After today's lengthy power failure, efforts to contact the complaints section of BESCOM turned futile as the Telephone was off the hook and at last the power was restored only in the evening.

Thus the people had to suffer a power shut down for more than six hours.

Kolar circle Superintending Engineer of Bescom, Shankare Gowda, had been telling often and often that steps were afoot to streamline the power situation in Kolar, but the situation has gone to worse from bad over the last fortnight.
