DMDK extends support to fast organised by CPI on October 2

Chennai, Sep 29 (UNI) In a politically significant move, the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK), headed by actor Vijayakanth, extended support to the fast, being organised by the Communist Party of India (CPI) here on October two regarding Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

CPI, Tamil Nadu unit secretary D Pandian, in a statement here, said Mr Vijayakanth, in a letter noted that party's Presidium Chairman S Ramachandran would take part in the fast and offer his felicitations.

The actor-politician's support assumed significance in the wake of Left parties trying to rope in the nascent DMDK in their proposed Third Front.

Mr Vijayakanth, however, said he was yet to decide on the alliance issue. ''I cannot say no when the Left party leaders wanted to meet and hold talks with me'', he had mentioned while addressing party workers recently.

The CPI is organising the fast, demanding that the Lankan Government immediately discontinue attack on Tamils and the Indian Government stop all military assistance to the island nation.

The fast was also to press for a negotiated settlement to the vexed ethnic crisis and urge the Indian Government to exert pressure on the Lankan Government to find an amicable solution to the Tamils issue.
