Crisis in NERIST continues; Registrar, sons arrested

Itanagar, Sep 27 (UNI) Police arrested the North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) Registrar and his two sons late last night for allegedly injuring three students of the institute.

TShe police here today said NERIST Registrar Ashok Singh and his sons -- Anurag Singh, an MBA student in NERIST, and Ankur Singh, a student of a local degree college -- attacked three students of the institute when they went to his residence demanding him to hand over the files he brought from office in the evening.

The injured were Students' Union of NERIST (SUN) president Kamta Tawe, Tai Dora, a PG student, and Taso Nobin, a diploma student, two of whom were admitted to R K Mission Hospital here in a critical condition, police informed.

Meanwhile, tension has been prevailing in the deemed university since Thursday after the students went on an indefinite strike demanding Singh's removal. Higher and Technical Education Director Dr Joram Begi was appointed as its director to tackle the situation.

Thousands of agitating students pelted stones at the registrar's quarter late last night and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

Papum Pare District Deputy Commissioner Bidol Tayeng and Superintendent of Police Hibu Tamang rushed to the spot to control the situation, police said, adding that search was conducted inside the registrar's quarter and they recovered weapons.
