Villagers hoist black flags on TNPL pollution
Karur, Tamil Nadu, Sep 26 (UNI) Villagers of Thannasigoundanur, Kallipalayam and Thunduperumalpalayam hoisted black flags in their houses near here today, protesting the alleged refusal of the State-owned Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Paper Ltd (TNPL) at Kagithapuram to provide various amenities, including drinking water, for them according to an order of Madras High Court.
According to the villagers, they were severely affected by the discharge of effluent water from the TNPL due to which their wetlands became totally unfit for cultivation. Besides, ground water was also polluted.
They moved the High Court for suitable legal remedy. The court had directed the TNPL to provide all basic amenities, including drinking water, for them, they claimed.
They alleged despite court's direction and their repeated representation to the TNPL Management, it turned a deaf ear to them.
They had no other alternative to draw the attention of the State Government by hoisting black flags on their houses.
They hoped at least now, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would instruct the officials concerned to redress their just and reasonable grievances.
