BJP criticises JMIU announcement to assist terror suspects
New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) Criticising the announcement of Musheerul Hassan, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia University, to extend legal assistance to the students suspected of involved in terrorist incidents in Delhi and other cities of the country, the BJP today said such funding by a exchequer funded agency tends to enthuse violators and will not be acceptable to the society.
Asked for his comments on the Dr Hassan's announcement to this effect, BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley said nobody questioned the right of the suspect to engage a lawyer to defend his case nor about judiciary providing legal assistance to those who could not afford to fight their case. However, when the Vice Chancellor says that his commitment was for the university and to the faith, the BJP would want his commitment to be extended the society and the country.
''We want him to keep larger view in mind'', he remarked.
He said the decision to announce the funds of the Central University for defending the heinous crime against the society and the Academic Council approving it was strange.
Answering questions on the Justice Nanavati Commission report, Mr Jaitley said it had recorded the obvious facts about the purchase of petrol and transporting it to the railway station and setting the bogies on fire. The evidences collected by the investigation agencies had stood the test in Judiciary and the bail had been denied to the accused upto the Supreme Court. However, there were attempts suggest 'preposterous things' like fire emanated from inside the train and similar attempts were made in the Parliament attack case suggesting that the attack was the handiwork of Indian intelligence agencies.
''We reject such reports'', he said.
About questioning the need for the commission to give its reports in parts, Mr Jaitley said he could not comment on the decision of the inquiry commission. They have said that it would come out with the second report in a couple of months, he said.
Regarding the attacks on Christian community in Orissa and Karnataka, Mr Jaitley said his party was for returning of normalcy in the trouble torn areas. The state governments were working on it, he said.
