89 telephone exchanges damaged in Orissa flood
Bhubaneswar,Sep 26 (UNI) As many as 89 telephone Exchanges in Orissa were damaged in the recent flood in the Mahanadi river system triggered by a deep depression in Bay of Bengal,Orissa Telecom Circle Chief General Manager S C Joshi said.
Talking to newsmen here, Mr.Joshi said the telephone exchanges in Cuttack,Puri,Phulbani,Bolangir and parts of Sambalpur and Kalahandi were damaged in the flood.
He said while the telecom officials have restored 60 Telephone exchanges,29 exchanges were yet to be restored as in many cases the media failure had damaged extensively with cable running into two to three kms washed away in the flood.
The CGM said of the 29 exchanges, at least seven telephone exchanges could be made ready only after restoration of power in the area.
He said as many as 11,388 landline telephones,3464WLL and 6575 mobile phones were affected in the flood and till date only fifty per cent of them had been attended.
