Ultra Motor launches new range of electric scooters

Chennai, Sep 25 (UNI) UK-based Ultra Motor Company today announced the launch of its new range of ultra motor electric scooters in Tamil Nadu.

The company launched Marathon, a first-of-its-kind electric scooter in the high range category, while continuing with its present high sped electric scooter "Velociti." Marathon would deliver a range of upto 100 kms on a single charge. It comes with a 250 watt motor and a power battery that helps it move at a speed of 25 km per hour.

Mr Ganesh Mahalingam, Managing Director, Ultra Motor India, said Marathon, priced at Rs 32,500, was targetted at those who were using scooter and moped and looking at economy and utility.

He said a single battery charge (one unit) would cost about Rs five, which meant, ten paise per km.

The battery would have life for a year and replacement would cost about Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000.

Last year, after the company launched Velociti, eight per cent of those using petrol-run two wheelers, switched over to electric scooter and this year it was expected to be ten per cent, he claimed.

Mr Mahalingam said the Delhi Government had removed VAT and offered 15 per cent subsidy on basic price to promote this pollution free vehicle. Other State Governments, including Tamil Nadu, should offer similar concessions, he said.

"We want the State Governments to help environment-friendly technology," Mr Mahalingam said. The company proposed to introduce three more new models very soon, he added.
