RJD candidate wins PBMC Chairman election
Port Blair, Sept 24 (UNI) S Selvi of Rastriya Janata Dal today won election to the office of the Chairperson of Port Blair Municipal Council for the 4th term. Mr Selvi defeated Samajwadi Party candidate Sudeep Rai Sharma by four votes.
Earlier, the election for the office of Chairman was conducted in the conference hall of Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC), the lone civic body of these far-flung islands under the supervision of Mr Uday Kumar, the Secretary of PBMC, who was also the electoral officer for the election.
Out of 18 votes, Mr Selvi managed to get 10 votes from the BJP-RJD alliance while Mr Sudeep Rai Sharma got only 6 votes. Two DMK councillors remained absent from the election.
"My first priority will be to serve the people of Port Blair with my best ability and provide them best civic amenities," the new Chairman of PBMC told UNI after winning the election.PBMC is the lone civic body of Andaman and Nicobar Islands with 18 elected and three nominated councillors.
Meanwhile, the president of Rastriya Janata Dal in Andaman, Mr P R Ganeshan has congratulated S Selvi, councillor of ward number 14, for winning the election for the office of Chairperson in PBMC.
