Online passport system revamped

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 24 (UNI) The Online Appointment System introduced at the Regional Passport office here on February one this year for the first time in India has been revamped, Regional Passport Officer S Balachandran today said.

Addressing the press here, Mr Balachandran said though the original system was working well, there were a few glitches.

In the existing system followed by DPCs across India, there was considerable time lag between submission of applications and issuance of passports.

In the improved version of the system, applicants could verify the status of their application and register for appointment, if need be.

With the commissioning of 'Online Registration of Applications by DPCs,' the entire process at DPCs, including acceptance of passport applications and billing, will be done online at the new website of Passport Office.

The new system would effectively decongest the passport office and completely eliminating touts who thrived on the applicants from far off places, he added.

The 'Online registration of applications by District Passport Centres (DPCs)' and the improved version of 'Online Appointment System' were launched today by National Informatics Centre (NIC) Technical Director R Sivakumar.

Mr Balachandran said the entire system was designed, developed and hosted by NIC team which was honoured with a shield.
