Senior Tripura CPI(M) leader passes away

Agartala, Sep 23 (UNI) Former member of Tripura Legislative Assembly and sitting member of North Tripura Zilla Parishad Bhudeb Bhattacharjee died at the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital this morning following a kidney-related complication.

The CPI(M) state committee expressed grief over the demise of Mr Bhattacharjee. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, outgoing secretary of the party Baidyanath Majumder and MLA Pabitra Kar also paid homage to the leader and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family.

Mr Bhattacharjee was 58 and is survived by his wife and two sons.

He was admitted to the hospital yesterday following sudden deterioration of his health.

Mr Bhattacharjee was an outstanding figure of the Communist movement in the tribal-dominated parts of North Tripura.

He had been seriously injured in a miscreant attack during a by-election in 1988 in Fatikroy constituency where he was contesting as the Left Front nominee.

He was elected to the Assembly in 1993 but was dropped from the Assembly in 1998 and elected to the Zilla Parishad in 2006.
