Manmohan ponders strong anti terror law, wants J-K polls on time

Onboard Air India One, Sept.23 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has asked officials to have a detailed look into the recommendations made by the Administrative Reforms Commission which has asked the government to introduce a tougher law on terror.

Commenting off the record on the recent terror attacks in India, Dr. Singh said: "It is a complex issue, it's not just a law and order issue, I have not made up my mind, we are still assessing whether we need a tough terror law or not."

Addressing the media team that is accompanying him on his 10-day visit to the United States and France, Dr. Singh also displayed a strong resolve to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir later this year, as scheduled.

He said: "It is up to the Election Commission. Is there ever a conducive time to hold elections?"

His statement assumes significance as it comes in the backdrop of the huge protests over the nearly two-month-long Amarnath communal forest land row in the state and the increased antagonism against the Central Government. By Naveen Kapoor
