ASMS demands 1966 as base year for NRC upgradation

New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Assam Sammelon Maha Sangha (ASMS), a conglomeration of 17 groups, today held a demonstration here urging the Centre to adopt the 1966 Census report as the basis for the upgradation of the 1951 National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) instead of 1951.

Addressing newspersons here, the Executive President of ASMS, Matiur-Ur Rehman, said the delegation has also submitted their memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well as the Home Shivraj Patil office requesting both of them to take up the matter on an urgent basis.

''We are not for harassing anyone under the pretext of foreigner issue. It is the Centre's duty to fulfill the long-cherished demand of the people from the State otherwise they will become minority and lose their social, economical and political say in the system,'' Mr Rehman said.

He added many people who entered the State during 1965 and 1971 stayed back by adopting various unfair means and enrolled themselves in the voters list which was not correct and that needs to be rectified.

ASMS President Chandra Kanto Terang and Tilak Mohan Secretary General were also present at the demonstration and also during the press meet.
