Union HRD ministry recognises Vel's Grp as Universities

Chennai, Sept 20 (UNI) The Union HRD Ministry has granted University status to the city-based Vel's Group of Institutions.

The University would be formally inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on September 24 at the University premises in suburban Pallavaram.

From the academic year 2008-09, six colleges affiliated to the Vel's Group would come under the Vel's University.

The University would have School of Maritime Studies, School of Arts and Science, School of Pharmacy, School of Physiotherapy, School of Hotel Management and School of Management Studies.

UGC Secretary Dr R K Chauhan and The Hindu Editor-in-Chief N Ram would be the guests of honour.

Madras University Vice chancellor Prof S Ramachandran and Dr MGR Medical UNiversity Vice-Chancellor Dr K Meer Mustafa Hussain would be present on the occasion in which the Governor would release a souvenir ''Success of Vels''.

Reacting to the group getting University status, Vel's University Chancellor Dr Ishari K Ganesh thanked the Union HRD Ministry and the UGC for granting the University status.

''Though University status had already been granted to us earlier through a notification, the inaugural function would formally herald the functioning of the University from the academic year 2008-09'', he added.
