District Collector to appear in court on Sep 24

Chennai, Sep 18: The Madras High Court has taken a serious view for non-compliance of court order by Kanniyakumari District Collector and ordered her to appear before the court on Sep 24.

Admitting a contempt petition on Wednesday, Sep 17, Justice A R Sivakumar pulled up District Collector Jyothi Nirmala for not obeying the court's earlier order directing her to appear before it on September 17.

''Does she think she is not amenable to law?'' the Judge asked.

Such an attitude could not be tolerated by the court, the judge said.

While passing orders on a writ petition filed by V Jayakumar, the judge on April 30, had directed the Collector to grant necessary permission to construct a church in Manavalakurichi village.

Since the court order was not complied with, Jayakumar filed a contempt petition and the judge ordered notice, directing the Collector to appear before him on September 17.

As the Collector failed to turn up before the court, the judge issued fresh order directing her to appear on September 24.
