Houses to be constructed for tsunami victims: Minister

Puducherry, Sep 18 (UNI) Puducherry Revenue Minister Malladi Krishna Rao today urged the officials to take immediate steps for the construction of 1,400 houses for the tsunami-affected fishermen of Kalapet and assured them that the required funds would be provided shortly.

Mr Rao, who presided over a review-meeting of the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, suggested the computerisation of villages and field-map for all revenue villages of Puducherry before February next year.

According to an official release here, the Minister suggested a corpus fund of about Rs 12 crore be made available with district collectors for immediate fullfillment of rescue and relief assistance in case of natural calamities.

Setting up of automatic weather stations in Mahe and Yanam regions, creation of required posts for the newly-carved districts and taluks to study feasibility of increasing revenue to the government were among the suggestions made by the minister at the meeting.

District Collector Thevaneethi Das and Revenue Secretary T M Balakrishnan took part in the meeting.
