Timber merchant stabbed, three held

Chennai, Sep 17 (UNI) A timber merchant, who intervened in a scuffle between his son and a two-wheeler rider, following a minor accident, was fatally stabbed at Mambalam area in South Chennai last night and three people were arrested in this connection today.

Police said the merchant Arunagiri's son Subramaniam was on his way in a bicycle to distribute mineral water cans to his customers, when a two-wheeler hit him from behind. The cycle was badly damaged in the accident.

A heated argument ensued between Subramaniam and the two-wheeler rider Chandrsekhar over compensation for the damaged cycle.

Meanwhile, Subramaniam informed his father about the incident following which, Arunagiri rushed to the spot along with two others.

For his part, Chandrasekhar too mustered support by calling five of his friends.

The argument took an ugly turn, when a supporter of Chandrasekhar, stabbed Arunagiri on the back. He sustained head injury as he fell down.

Arunagiri, who ran a timber shop in the area, was rushed to a private hospital and then later to the Government General Hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead.' Acting on a complaint, police arrested Chandrasekhar and two of his supporters and launched a manhunt to nab three others in connection with the murder.
