Chennai, Sep 15 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today appealed to leaders of various political parties to support his government's ''Rupee one a kg of rice'' scheme, in fulfillment of the dream of DMK patriarch and former Chief Minster C N Annadurai, instead of finding fault with the scheme.

Speaking after launching the scheme here today, on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of ''Anna'', the Chief Minister said the opposition parties should be fair in their criticism and point out the shortcomings in a scheme, instead of opposing them, for the sake of opposing.

Stating that no scheme could be fool-proof when it was launched, Mr Karunanidhi said even if Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi took a new ''avtar'' and became Chief Minister or Prime Minister of the country, he would not be able to provide a fool-proof governance.

''Even if God takes an incarnation and rules the country there would be some shortcomings in governance'', he observed.

Referring to the remarks made by AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa and DMDK President Vijayakanth that the new scheme would only pave way for smuggling of rice, he said ''why should people get such doubts. Only thieves would get such doubts'', he said amid laughter.

Some other leaders say that the government would not be able to provide quality rice at this rate, but all this was not fair criticism, he said adding, insteads, political party leaders should give constructive suggestions to the government to successfuly implement the scheme.

If they point out real shortcomings in the scheme, the government was willing to rectify them, he said. If the political party leaders criticised the ''Rupee one per kg of rice scheme'', they would only be criticising Anna, who wanted to implement the scheme when he caome to power in 1967, he said.

He said when late Chief Minister K Kamaraj launched the noon meal scheme, no one found fault with the scheme. Similarly, when late M G Ramachandran launched the nutritious scheme, he gave valuable suggestions as how it should be implemented, he added.
