Five injured in violence following attack on Churches

Mangalore, Sept 14 (UNI) Five people, including three policemen were injured when police fired in the air to quell a mob protesting against the attack on nine places of worship in the southern districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur.

Police said lathicharge and lobbing of teargas shells failed to control the situation, as groups of people protested against the attack allegedly by Bajrang Dal activists, which turned violent at Milagris in the city.

While four places were attacked in the city, three others were attacked at Udupi district and two in Chikmagalur. This resulted in large group coming out in streets and protesting against the attack.

Traffic was disrupted in the city and the Highway connecting Udupi, while buses were off the roads for most part of the day.

The injured, included a journalist and a nun during the violence that led to firing in the air near Kankanady in the city.

Meanwhile, Union Minister for Labour Oscar Fernandes condemned the attack and urged the people to remain calm.

KPCC President Mallikarjun Kharge, while condemning the attack demanded the resignation of State Home minister V S Acharya, who belonged to DK district.
