Liquor smugglers try to run over police party

Sangrur, Sep 13 (UNI) A gang of liquor smugglers today tried to run over a police party which had flagged down their tempo at a police post near village Rupaheri on the Sangrur-Nabha highway.

The police team, led by CIA inspector Govinder Singh, however, managed to save themselves and reassembled to give a sprited chase of about 5 km in a private car, forcing the tempo driver to get into the fields and abandon the vehicle, police sources said.

While about three mebers of the gang managed to flee into the fields, police was successful in nabbing Malkeet Singh, a resident of Barnala district.

A search of the abandoned tempo revealed 250 crates full of liquor bottles, being transported illegally, they said.

The police have registered a case under sections 307, 427, 34 of the IPC and various sections of the Excise Act, the sources said.
