Corporation to build 21,000 houses for staff

Mumbai, Sep 12 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will construct 21,000 houses for its staff at a cost of Rs 870 crore across the city in phases.

Addressing mediapersons here today, Standing Committee Chairman Ravindra Waikar said the corporation has located 36 plots of the corporation across the city to build the houses with all amenities for its staff.

Elaborating on the plan, Mr Waikar said there are 17 plots in the city -- ten in the western suburbs and nine in the eastern suburbs.

The first phase will begin in the next couple of months as government had already granted permission to utilise a floor space index of upto four.

He said the construction cost of the 300 sq feet area flat would be around Rs five lakh and would be built purely for the corporation employees and added that after their retirement, they would have to vacate the flat.

The corporation also planned to construct houses for retired employees, he added.
