WB: Under-construction shopping mall crashes

Howrah, Sep 11: A multi-storeyed under-construction shopping mall at the Kazipara area under Shibpur police station of this district came crashing down.

Superintendent of Police Niraj Kumar Singh said here today that the basement and ground floor of the under-construction shopping mall gave way late last night, leading to the crashing down of the remaining floors of the building.

However, there was no report of any casualty in the incident, the SP said.

Three fire tenders and police forces rushed to the spot to undertake rescue operations. Fortunately, no one was present at the site when the mishap occurred.

Three of the owners of the construction company have been arrested on charges of negligence and using spurious materials, the SP said, adding that an investigation has been launched.

Meanwhile, local Congress leaders announced to organise a road blockade at Howrah in protest against the incident.
