Cabinet clears natonal biofuels policy; 2 comms. to be set up

New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave the go-ahead for implementation of the National Policy on Biofuels with the setting up of the National Biofuel Coordination Committee and Biofuel Steering Committee.

Announcing this, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that the members of the coordination committee would include of the Prime Minister who will be its Chairman.

Its other members are Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Minister for Rural Development, Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Environment and Forests, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Minister for Science and Technology. The Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will be the convener.

The Biofuel Steering Committee will be headed by the Cabinet Secretary. The other members include the Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Department of Land Resources, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Secretary, Planning Commission and Secretary, Department of Scientific Industrial Research. Its member secretary will be the Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
