BJP candidate elected taluk panchayat president

Madikeri, Sep 11 (UNI) Koluvanda Sumanth Ponnanna of BJP wrested the post of Virajpet Taluk Panchayath President from the Congress in an election with the support of a JD(S) member, here today.

Ms Saritha Poonacha of Congress had recently resigned from the President post after she was defeated in a no-confidence motion when her partyman Mollera Sada Appachu revolted against her.

Out of 19 members in the Taluk Panchayat, the Congress has nine, the BJP eight and the JD(S) two.

The District Assistant Commissioner Akram Pasha was the Election Officer.

However, Congress member B V Jayalakshmi and JD(S) member Biju did not participate in the voting. Both the Congress and BJP got the support of eight members each. Another JD(S) member Addanda Cariaappa voted for BJP.
