Dawrpui bandh affects life in Aizawl
Aizawl, Sep 9 (UNI) The Dawrpui Multipurpose Centre Demand Committee (DMCDC) sponsored a 12-hour bandh demanding that a ''multipurpose centre-cum-green park'' be set up.
DMCDC chairman Chhawnkima Pachuau told UNI today that the Dawrpui residents have long been demanding an open space serving as a multipurpose centre and green park. However, they alleged that the government was planning to set up doctors' quarters on the proposed land, without paying heed to their proposal.
Banks and shopping malls remained close during the shutdown, hampering business activity in the Dawrpui areas as it was the main commercial centre in Aizawl.
A large faction of Dawrpui residents staged sit-in demonstration, while heavy police forces were deployed to check any untoward incident.
''The government authorities, including the chief minister, have given us a verbal assurance to fulfill our demand. However, we do not harbour faith on them anymore. It is because on earlier occasions the government had made such promises without implementing them. We demand the promises black and white,''Mr Chhawnkima said.
