W. Bengal Governor hopes for a result on Singur impasse by Monday
Kolkata, Sept 7 : West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi has said talks to break Singur deadlock are on track and they would continue on Sunday. He also sais that he expected a "satisfactory" result by Monday. After presiding over the second round of talks between the State Government and the main opposition Trinamool Congress on Saturday Gandhi told reporters here on Saturday that: "We lead to the satisfactory conclusion in a next session over tomorrow (Sunday) or day after tomorrow (Monday). This is what I wanted to tell you."
Hoping for the talks to continue with same frankness and cordiality to reach a satisfactory conclusion, Gandhi said that the parties concerned are seriously engaged in resolving the issue.
A Raj Bhavan statement said that both sides went into greater detail on the prospects of a land-based rehabilitation scheme in and around the Singur project site.
Gandhi, who initiated the talks following a TATA Motors announcement that it would relocate its Nano plant from Singur and suspend work at the factory due to the Trinamool-led agitation, is also planning to talk with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee.
Meanwhile, the ruling Left Front has scheduled to hold an emergency meeting here this morning to discuss the Singur impasse.
The State Government has offered to give around 47 acres of land owned by the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation within the plant site to land losers for setting up a market complex with a view to facilitating their economic rehabilitation. In addition, some land around the Singur project site may also be given to land losers.
However, the Trinamool Congress-led Krishijami Jiban-o-Jibika Raksha Committee has rejected the Government's offer. It is insisting on the return of 400 acres of land taken away from unwilling farmers.
The State Government has gone on record saying that the beneficiaries of whatever compensation or rehabilitation package now agreed upon would include those farmers who have handed over their land willingly and have also accepted their compensation cheques.
The Nano project has been billed as key to the rejuvenation of industries in West Bengal. The controversy over the factory has hurt the state''s image as an investment destination.
